Sharon’s story.

Returning to everyday life after ankle replacement

Ankle arthritis

For almost two decades, Sharon’s right ankle pain had become progressively harder to live with. Gardening, travel, walking her dog and even getting through a grocery store were affected. An earlier recommendation for fusion, and other people’s difficult experiences with replacement, had made her hesitant to pursue surgery.

Dr. Noman A. Siddiqui discussed her options and expectations before performing an ankle replacement. Sharon describes a recovery involving a cast, then a boot, with weight bearing introduced later. These were the milestones of her individual treatment plan.

In her published account, she reported returning to walks, stairs, meal preparation and volunteering without the constant pain she had previously experienced. She valued clear answers from the surgeon and support from the hospital team. Her account also describes ongoing attention to a small incision wound that was slow to heal. The story reflects both the importance of recovery support and the activities she hoped to regain.

This account reflects the patient’s experience at the time of the original institutional story. It does not predict another person’s result or recovery timeline.
