What this means for patients

Ankle arthritis damages the joint surfaces and may cause pain, stiffness and difficulty walking. Ankle replacement replaces damaged joint surfaces with an implant, with the goal of relieving pain while retaining movement. Suitability depends on the joint, alignment, bone quality, circulation and overall health. A consultation compares replacement with nonoperative treatment, realignment or fusion where appropriate.

Why the ankle becomes arthritic

Previous fractures or repeated injuries can change the ankle’s alignment and accelerate wear of its joint surfaces. Inflammatory disease and other conditions can also contribute. Pain when standing or walking, swelling and restricted movement may gradually limit everyday activity.

Choosing between support, replacement and fusion

Footwear changes, bracing, physical therapy and selected medicines or injections may be discussed before surgery. Replacement aims to preserve movement; fusion eliminates movement at the treated joint. Weight-bearing imaging, bone quality, circulation, sensation and any infection help determine which approach is suitable.

Alignment and recovery planning

An arthritic ankle must be assessed together with the rest of the foot. Additional realignment may be needed for a balanced reconstruction. Discuss protection, rehabilitation, help at home and ongoing implant monitoring; the plan depends on the procedures performed and individual healing.

Questions for your consultation

  • Am I a candidate for ankle replacement?
  • How does replacement compare with fusion in my case?
  • Would my foot or ankle alignment need correction?
