What this means for patients

A bunion, or hallux valgus, is a change in the alignment of the big toe and first metatarsal. Minimally invasive correction uses small incisions and specialized instruments to realign selected deformities. Dr. Noman A. Siddiqui’s publications examine osteotomy positioning, fixation and radiographic outcomes. The choice of technique depends on alignment, symptoms and medical history; incision size alone does not determine the result or recovery.

More than a prominent bump

A bunion reflects a change in the relationship between the first metatarsal and big toe. The toe may crowd its neighbors while the prominence rubs against footwear. Wider shoes and pressure relief can improve comfort, but they do not reverse the underlying bone alignment.

Selecting the right correction

Examination and standing X-rays show the degree of deformity, joint condition and associated problems. Selected bunions can be corrected through small incisions using specialized bone-cutting instruments and fixation. A more extensive correction may be appropriate for other patterns; the operation should match the deformity.

What a smaller incision can—and cannot—tell you

Incision size alone does not predict healing or suitability. Ask how the bones will be stabilized, what protection is required and when activity can progress. Bone healing, swelling and rehabilitation continue after the skin has healed.
