Joyce’s story.

Improving balance after rheumatoid foot deformity

Toe deformities

Joyce had lived with rheumatoid arthritis since the late 1980s. Deformities of the toes on her left foot made walking uncomfortable and affected her balance. Several earlier operations, including a toe amputation, had not provided the relief she hoped for.

A family member working at the Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics suggested an evaluation with Dr. Noman A. Siddiqui. He considered her condition and surgical history, then discussed a plan to address the toe deformities in one outpatient operation.

After treatment, Joyce reported easier walking, improved balance and the ability to wear sandals. In her published account, she emphasizes the value of having her questions answered and feeling that the care plan was specific to her situation. She also describes helpful support from scheduling through surgery. Her story illustrates the role of an individual assessment when arthritis and previous surgery have changed the foot.
